An unexpected purchase last Friday – I went to Aberdeen Center and saw Ruka for sale at one of the figure shops. Many bootleg nendoroids around, but I could tell this one was authentic. My Ritsu arrived in the mail on the same day too. Two more to go, and my K-On! collection will be complete. I’ve got a special photoshop idea in mind once that happens.
A new painting that I did. Only took about 5 or 6 hours, this one. It’s sorta “improv” painting. No reference photos or anything, and just paint whatever comes at the moment. It’s a wallpaper, so click on it if you want to see the full size.

It’s a good thing that Vocaloid nendoroids seem to be constantly restocked. I decided not to wait, so I just paid a bit of a premium for it (probably $15 more than if I bought online). Was sad that I missed the initial preorders, so this makes up for it.

Ruka wasn’t actually on sale. She was just in stock at the shop I happened to impulsively go into. So it’s definitely lucky! I have Mio, Ritsu, and Yui, so I’m missing two, I think?

wow what a beautiful piece of art! till today, i am not able to wrap my head around painting with colors like that. are you manually adjusting the value in color or do you make a color palette before hand? great job ^^

Thanks Rockleelotus! I find it difficult to paint in color sometimes. They’re usually off. So coloring them after the illustration is complete is a good option, though it tends to look strangely less rich in terms of the colors when I do it that way.
That little takoluka is super adorable. I wish here were more faces for her though. It looks like she’s built so that you can swap faces.

Oh dear, Ningyo! You don’t have a credit card? I typically carry little to no money in my wallet too (enough for food, but that’s about it). In order to make sure I don’t overspend, I keep track of all my expenses. There’s no way I would be able to make these impulse purchases otherwise.
The songs are from Nodame Cantabile. A very good anime series that I recommend (if you like romantic comedies)!

Congrats on getting Luka! It’s interesting how she looks exactly like Miku except for her hair and costume.
Not really sure what the swirly magic thing is supposed to be, but I did want to make it match with the theme of the scene, so yeah, you could say that it’s like the tiara. 🙂

Thanks Lyli! I’m definitely happy that I picked up Ruka. I was really sad when I missed out on the preorders for her, but not too sad because I know vocaloids tend to be re-issued. When I saw her in the store, I couldn’t wait to buy her (cost me about $15 more than what I would have paid online, but then it’s worth it to have her in hand now than later).
Ritsu is totally worth it. The drum set is awesome, and her changeable hair style plus magnetic bump is super cool!
I’m not 100% happy with the painting, but I guess it’s “good enough for now.” I still need to keep improving! >:3c

I never understood how some frigging AWESOME artists pull the kind of paintings you did here in just a few hours… So I’m gonna ask YOU now ^__^. How do you do it? It still boggles my mind, even in art class for something simple I’m always one of the lasts to finish up; maybe I should go to the basics again?
I was kind of sad for not picking Luka, but in all honesty I don’t like her songs and voice that much, so maybe it’s a good thing. Her cuteness and huge puppy dog eyes won’t work on me! NEVER! *covers eyes*
what are you talking about?! You’re awesome too! Personally, I think you have awesome style – better than mine. You’ve got something that’s been refined, and looks good. I’m surprised that I don’t see you post your work more often.
I wish I could give you a straight answer on “how do I do it”. I think a lot of it has to do with just practicing, and always looking at artwork better than you. When you do that, you kind of develop an eye for it as well, and you naturally get better. When you start drawing again, and feel that your work sucks, it’s not because it sucks, it’s because you’ve developed a better sense of art and style, just that your technique hasn’t caught up with you yet. I get that all the time – I get frustrated that my art is not up to par from what I believe is good, and then after some more practice, I surprise myself. Keep at it, Yakuri. Your art rocks as it is.
I don’t listen to Vocaloid music that much, and you know me – I don’t buy a figure because I like the character. Most of the time, I don’t even know who the character is. I buy figures because they look nice. 🙂
It seems like all my purchases are unexpected/impulse 🙂
