Back in September, I was commissioned by Narrator 1 for a presentation piece for one of his characters, Rina. I’m not really sure of the back story of Rina, or any of the characters associated with her, but the description given to me was:
The protagonist is in her late adolescence, though not yet an adult. She has a figure that could best be described as “cute” (think Mikuru – large but not overly so bustline on a relatively small frame). Green eyes. Straight, two-tone (black, but with blond tips at the ends), loose hair that runs to her upper back. Has a smile on her face. Wears a casual bust-emphasizing blouse and knee-length skirt ensemble.
As you can tell, the only thing that’s different are the two-tone blonde black tips, and green eyes. Those were put in on the final work, but I decided I liked this more subdued color variation for my own works.
She has the same demeanor of a soft feminine girl, but retains a bit of tomboyish feel. Her blouse is a more feminine one with some ruffles on the sleeves, and in the middle button up area, with a contrasting large belt buckle to highlight the bit of tomboy in her.
Her pose has a bit of daintiness to her, holding her left hand up, while still maintaining a bit of tsundere attitude with her right hand on her hip. They complement each other to give her a sense of mischief.
To track my progress, and the time spent on the drawing, I also made a youtube video.

I quite enjoyed working on this piece, even though I feel it wasn’t my best work. I had tried out some new techniques here, including a red under-painting of the skin, which turned out a lot better than I had expected. If you want to learn that technique, pay attention to the video. I use a red under paint before painting the skin on top of it. The result is a much more vibrant shadow color and mid tone.
hmmm she doesn’t look that tomboy really LOL! the soft colouring style kinda reminds me of “Orange Road”
Yeah, she does kinda have that “Orange Road” style about her, doesn’t she? 😀
Thanks for these. I just went and watched the last couple you posted.
sweet! it’s been a while. I noticed that you don’t post as often anymore too. ._.
Red underpaint… The first thing that came to my mind was red primer that are used on manufactures etc. Don’t ask me why o_o;; (Ok I got that thought out of the blue because I know late German tanks in WWII used red primers before applying their camouflage scheme on [not sure modern times though], of which is always vibrant and interesting, even for modelling world)
Really? WWII tanks used red primer? Why would they do that? I know you can buy colored primer for painting your walls, so that you can see the difference in color when you apply your actual paint. (white primer with white paint is hard to see). I’m guessing this is the same for model painting and garage kits too.
When doing digital (or even traditional painting) it’s a little different. Whatever under color you use, it will continually show through your paints and blend with it. That’s why you have an under color as an “ambient diffuse” for your shadows.
It’s B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L ! And no tomboy at all, she’s wearing a cute skirt after all !
Love how you dressed her up. I’m totally charmed.
Thanks! I’ve always thought tomboy is a personality, as well as an appearance. In this case, it’s more of her personality? Not sure. ha ha ha.
I’m quite happy with her blouse! 😀
Yes that’s true. You can act as a tomboy while being very feminine on the outside.
I think every girl got a tomboy side 🙂
Chun pretty much nailed the description. The design and look really does hark back to 80’s character designs like in orange road!
Good job tho, maybe I’ll commission you to do a mascot for my blog when I think it’s grown to a sufficient size to warrant one!
I wouldn’t mind doing another piece of work that looked even more closer to the 80’s Orange Road sometime actually. It would be fun.
I would be honored to do a mascot for you if you so request it! Hope your blog grows to a size that warrants one! 😀
See your work through videos you record is very instructive. Thanks for sharing your workmanship.
For you maybe this is not your best work but i think this character made based on a description really well worked.
Subdued colors like this are pleasant! Cheer to brown hairs! (yes i’m brown LooooL)
thanks for always checking out my work, Lylibellule! It always makes me happy when you comment. ^_^
You’re brown-haired? Sweet! Someday, I’ll ask for a picture. 😀
Wow .. lovely piece .. very cute looking gal
She got this air around her that sort of indicate she is frm a noble family imo.
Red under paint for skin… think i can try that too …
=)
cool! Actually yes, according to her background, she’s supposed to be from a rich family, if I recall correctly. Narrator 1 would have to clarify. 😛
The red under paint definitely adds vibrancy, but there are disadvantages to it – if not done right, the complexion will look blotchy. Good luck!
Thx.. will take note on that
Uwaa, kirei…
That’s a very detailed description you started with… And you remained very true to it while seamlessly injecting your own style into it.
I’m not much of an appraiser for art, but that’s my two cents, haha.
So what does it take to commission Radiant >:3?
And wouldcha like to blogroll exchange? I’ve already done the honors.
oh! I apologize for that! Link added to blog roll! I have a feeling that we’ll be reading each others’ blogs frequently, so I’ve gone ahead and added you to my “buddies” list. 🙂
Thanks for the comment! My prices differ depending on the client – I usually charge cheaper for individuals that want some sort of fan-art type thing done, and I also have a corporate rate for businesses that want my work for more professional caliber stuff.
Impressive! With descriptions alone, you could come up with this. Your imaginative power is great! A true skill of a lead/senior artist 🙂 I’m a 0 and 1 guy but I enjoy your tutorial very much. Thank you.
oh! You’re a programmer! Nice! What sort of programming do you do? I’m always amazed at how programmers are able to do so much using instructions and text. It just boggles my mind! I guess being an artist, I wouldn’t be able to stare at thousands of lines of code everyday. Just the if statement would drive me batty!
While we’re on opposite ends of the spectrum, it’s so cool that we can appreciate each others’ work! 🙂
We’re in the same industry. 🙂
I’m mainly doing network (client/server) stuff now.
Cool! I should talk with you privately on industry stuff. 😀
