A while ago, I had posted an article on Anime Figurines Network on the difference between certain types of plastics. Today, I’ve decided to take that article, make modifications and clarifications on it, and post it here. This article will cover various plastics from PVC, to Resin, and their methods, properties and advantages.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
PVC is a softer plastic, that is typically tinted before being put into the mold. It’s easily paintable (no primer needed) and acrylic paint just typically sticks to it without much of a hitch. It’s relatively cheap plastic. Also, because of its soft properties, sculptors are able to get away with putting in more detail and awkward angles. The downside obviously, is it’s soft, there’s a high chance of leaning figures. PVC is also easily repairable and very durable. You can drop a PVC figure without much problem, and it takes a lot of deliberate strength to tear PVC apart. But at that same note, it is a lot weaker than ABS.
PVC can also be made into a very hard plastic (PVC pipes). This is based on the density of how much plastic is put into an area. They do this with some of the single-leg standing pose figures. By increasing the density and consistency, there is less chance of leaning.
PVC poses some health concerns to most people, and as a figure collector, it should concern you too. To get the soft consistency of PVC, plasticizers must be added to it. Fortunately, it would only be hazardous to you if you ingest the PVC somehow, either through eating, or sticking it in places you’re not supposed to. Hence, baby toys and adult sex toys are considered part of this category. On another note, the PVC manufacturing process produces a lot of dioxins which are environmentally unfriendly. The next time you purchase a PVC figure, be more selective to save the environment, money, space, and general other headaches later on. Some PVC can be recycled (if it has the number 3 on it). So if you’ve had it with that figure you own, and nobody wants to buy it, see if it can be recycled first! Chances are though, you’ll have to throw it out instead…
Vinyl
Vinyl actually isn’t a plastic… or anything at all really. People seem to mistake that Vinyl is a plastic of some sort seen in some Kotobukiya figures. (really old Final Fantasy 8 figures, Star Wars figures, Matrix figures). Most of these Kotobukiya figures are hollow inside, meaning that the figure is constructed out of various hollow tubes put together. In actuality, Vinyl is any compound that includes a “vinyl group” (this gets into chemistry. If you’re interested, look up “Ethylene”). So in essence, PVC is a vinyl. Just that those Kotobukiya figures use a different type of PVC compound that’s a lot softer and thinner, making them highly flexible. “Vinyl Figures” are by far the worst for the environment because of the “softening” additives.
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
ABS plastic is what your Playstation 1 shell (or other console system plastic shell) is made out of. It’s also what most Gundams are made out of. ABS is much harder, and is typically smooth. You can add texture to it, but it’s typically not a very fine texture. It’s impossible for paint to stick, so it almost always has to be primed first. Also, because of it’s hard nature, it’s impossible to get details that are more than 90 degrees angle, because otherwise the piece will be caught in the mold. That’s why all injection kits edges are always perpendicular. It can be round on the top all the way down to the edge, but it cannot go beyond that 90 degree mark.
ABS is made from a combination of monomers made from propylene, ammonia, butane, and coal. The advantage is that it combines the strength and rigid properties, as well as the rubbery toughness (ABS can bend without snapping). ABS is by far the strongest plastic used for making figurines. So while PVC is soft and rubbery in resilience, ABS is tough and rigid.
Resin (Rosin)
Interestingly enough, resin isn’t really a plastic a all from the technical sense. It’s compound consists of mostly organic ingredients found in plants and trees. What we commonly see in figurines is actually a synthetic resin. This synthetic resin has similar properties to ABS, but it is more brittle. It’s more akin to liquid solidified, almost like soap. The process is similar to epoxy – combining two liquids together to cause a chemical reaction of solidifying. When casting resin, this is essentially what happens. A finished resin cast has the same smoothness as PVC, but has trouble sticking paint. It too has to be primed. Resin is that it’s typically used for hobby kits, and therefore the sculptor doesn’t have to concern too much with technical restrictions of mass production products like PVC and ABS. The pieces are cut up into logical manners to fit within the restriction, and it’s up to the hobbyist to hide the seams, and fit the pieces together. The advantage of resin kits is that it’s soft and easy to sand and cut, while sturdy enough to hold up weight. High quality resin is typically very dense and can withstand quite a bit of pounding, but will shatter under significant pressure, while ABS would simply bounce back. But because of ABS’s toughness, it’s easier to sand resin.
Polystone (Resin compound)
Polystone is a similar property to resin, but is even more brittle! It’s higher quality than resin because of the base materials it uses – mainly it uses minerals such as aluminum hydrate, as opposed to synthetic materials. It’s typically made for mass-produced statues, such as the Final Fantasy 7 polystone cold-casts. From what I can tell, it seems that polystone is the least restrictive. The edges and cuts seem the cleanest, and a fair amount of detail can be put into it. This may be why polystone is the material of choice for mass produced resin cast figures.
Cold Casting (Epoxy)
Cold-Casting is the process of mixing a urethane resin with a metal powder to give the appearance of a shiny metal surface. It can also be used with paint to produce a resin of a certain color. As far as I know, cold casting is quite the opposite of regular casts, which are typically done with moderate temperature plastic molding. I think with cold casting, the liquid resin is already cold, and is freshly mixed. There is a certain amount of time before the mix solidifies into a solid. It’s during this time that the liquid must be poured into the mold. I believe it’s because of this, that you can get such clean lines and smooth surfaces.
Another method I know of for plastic making include heating plastics into solid molds. A solid object is made as a base, and a sheet of plastic is placed on top, and heated. It then melts and conforms to the shape of which it is placed on. The excess is then cut away. This is typically how plastic take-out trays are made. Another is the blow method, where a sheet of plastic is placed into an enclosed mold, heated with hot air. The air blows and expands the plastic to the walls of the mold and is then cooled. This is typically used to make plastic bottles like milk jugs. Vinyl figures can be made using the above manners, though I don’t know how efficient that actually would be.

Edit : Recently, a new type of plastic has shown up in the figure market – ABTC, or acetyl tributyl citrate. This isn’t actually a plastic or a derivative. It’s a plasticizer. Basically a chemical that is compatibile with PVC to change its consistency or hardness. Here is a list of figures made out of ABTC from Hobbysearch.

ABS has been around for a loooooong time. It’s the most commonly used plastic actually. Most of your old toys, like GI Joe, transformers, old model cars, they’re all made out of ABS. ABS is also used for hard pipes for plumbing (usually black), and PVC is also used for pipes too! (usually white).

Nowadays, we see more and more figurines said to be made of pvc AND abs. That wasn’t the case less than one year ago. Only pvc if I remember well.
Since abs is that old, isn’t it a bit strange that it is only used for figurine recently?
Sweet, now I can wow the customers if they ever ask me what the heck ABS is :p as well as go into a whole diatribe of the other materials =D It’ll probably take me a week or more to memorize and pronounce ABS correctly first though, heh. :p
Still, this post is a great thing for figure collectors. Can never hurt to know more about your hobby instead of going “errm….” when somebody asks ^^; So among all these different materials, which one would you prefer based on the properties?
If I had to venture a guess, cost and durability is a major factor as to why we see more of PVC as opposed to the other types? Or am I the proverbial frog in the well that I fail to realize that there are just as many other types out there being produced at the same frequency? ^^;

Personally, with my experiences in what material seems to have the best outcome, I would have to say PVC tends to yield better results. Because of its semi-soft properties, it’s less restrictive, so the sculptor has a lot more leeway to do whatever he wants. ABS is too rigid, and with that 90 degree angle restriction, it’s really really limited.
When you talk about figures being made out of both PVC and ABS, well to make a point – every single figure you currently own that has a base, the base is most likely made out of ABS.
Recent figures that incorporate ABS are usually limited to things like props – swords, shields, and other accessories are typically all ABS. The exception to this at the moment is Ignis the White. Her dress is made out of ABS. However, I believe her legs are made out of a harder PVC.
In terms of frequency, I would say ABS is used more frequently, especially in children’s toys. PVC seems to be used for things that need more flexibility. Current generation toys aimed at ages 7+ such as McFarlane, My Little Pony, GI Joe, Star Wars, they’re all made out of PVC. I am not sure what the cost factors are, but the physical advantages are obvious.

I’m sure that you can buy components of polystone from plastics manufacturers, but it would most likely be in bulk purchases. Otherwise, it might be fairly expensive. Try the China market. They offer the cheapest plastics as far as I know.

i came across your article while trying to find out what type of paint i can use on a pvc figurine. i bought a second hand figurine and it has scratches across the (pink) hair which are very ugly, so i want to try and touch it up.
does anyone have any experience with this??

I do know that it’s possible PVC is easy to paint over and doesn’t require any primer. Acrylic paint should work great.

maybe resin material is the most fragile material
i bought ryoumou shinmei from gathering which made from resin material and the fragile part is its ribbon (its easily broken)so i must extra care to handle this part

The best material for hobbyists to make figures from is resin. Typically, people don’t have access to PVC since it’s used mainly in factories, and requires special processes to make, which is hazardous to human health. Sculpting from resin is ideal.
Resin is fragile, but it is also very hard. It’s not as bendable as PVC, but won’t tear like PVC. They’re different properties, and break under different conditions.
In terms of the Silicon, it’s not actually added to the figure itself. It looks to me like her panties are molded out of silicon. I’m surprised nobody had thought of this trick earlier.

maybe the polystone material is more higher value than resin or its so much cost in painting the polystone figures or maybe sculpting process to make polystone figures is more complicated than other materials.

non of them like direct heat really but it depends what you mean by direct heat. All can withstand a hairdryer on medium setting.
Polyurethane, normally used for cold cast and/or polystone can give of hydrogen cyanide fumes when heated too aggressively.
bowen design statue and kotobukiya art fx was made from polystone and its have more details and its more durable actually if we compare with pvc or resin

there are the differences between old revoltech and yamaguchi revoltech but the materials they are used is same thing such as pvc and abs.
but its finished product is different, its maybe from its design or maybe from its technique to make figures.
we know several products like revoltech has some joints from its arm and other part body, and my question is i want to know what materials that used for revo joints
It is interesting to gain some knowledge about different plastics and what products they are used for. Obviously items like baby toys can be hazardous so it is invaluable to know what to look out for. And that you can check your old plastic figures etc to see if they can be re-cycled. Interesting stuff!

I’m planning to make a resin figure myself…i read that resins are not easy to be coloured(that it needs to be ‘primed’?) May I know how do I ‘prime’ it?
Hi! A primer paint is what’s needed. Primer is generally a little sticky, so it can cling onto the surface well and provide a stickier surface for the paint itself. It’s the same with painting walls – prime before paint.

I think Acrylic paint should be okay to use for ATBC-PVC. It seems like a variant on PVC anyway, so the surface texture is probably the same. If you want to be extra safe, there’s no harm in priming it first.

I was wondering why cold casts are usually more expensive that most figures. (Unless I’m mistaken) Is it due to the process or materials used to make the cold cast.
I work in the film industry making maquettes, props and miniature models. I work with all types of casting resins… polyester, polyurethane, epoxy, silicone, monomers, polymers and plasticised plasters.
Polystone isn’t Polyethylene. Polyethylene is used mainly (like you stated) in the manufacture of plastic bags and recyclable containers and would be very difficult to paint because of it’s ability to repel nearly everything. It also wouldn’t lend itself very well for high detail.
Polystone is either a polyurethane or polyester resin containing powdered marble or Calcium carbonate.
*Polyurethane is a two part resin comprising of polyol and isocyanate. It is mixed at room temp to create an off white to lily white rigid plastic. There are varied densities… but I imagine or rather hope that companies like Sideshow Collectibles use a good quality, non leaching and UV stable product. I personally have avoided buying polystone status/busts because it is relatively cheap and doesn’t match the price they are sold at. for instance… a 2kg kit costs around £15.
Polyester which is sometimes used for polystone and cold cast porcelain is what is commonly used to bind fibreglass. It is a good casting material when filled, although It is very brittle and prone to shrinkage.
Epoxy isn’t commonly used for cold cast because it requires post baking after it has been demoulded so therefor negates the title ‘cold cast’.

Does ABS plastic contain glass fibres at all?
Does anybody here know how to make soft plastic for customizing a figma? I want to customize a figure and I have epoxy putty and instamorph. I would like to know how to make the soft rubbery plastic that you find in some figmas that is flexible and can move. It is mostly used in a skirt or a layer of hair. This is a great, brief, basic article on plastics. It helped me determine what type of plastic certain articles in my home were made of so that I would know how to properly clean them (remove the yellow, etc.). Thanks for this post.

For the Sekaiseifukudan series it’s a complicated method of vinyl exterior and a silicon vinyl interior. I wanted to create a toy with this sort of soft transparent look and have been having difficulties finding the materials. I work in clean paints and wood material as a 2D artist, but don’t know a lot about environmental attributes of toys, so thank you for this. If I can’t find a proper material for the soft light or transparent effect in hard materials, I guess I’ll go back to cleaner molding materials such as clay or papier mache. See if there’s a way I can work in a glow effect there.
Those look beautiful! I’m not sure if this would work, or if you’d end up with a marble-coloring effect – but perhaps you can use a clear material, with a color dye mixture in it? You’d have to contact a plastics manufacturer specialist to get more details on their processes. Good luck!
Will something made of polystone hold up in the outside weather? I am wanting to order some birds made of polystone but don`t know about putting them outside. After reading all the information I still don`t know if something would hold up outside. Can you please help me?
