I’m super happy that the site has reached 20,000 hits! Thanks avid readers! I’m glad that you are checking back and reading my articles! I guess that means I’m doing something right! So here’s my simulated fighting game photoshop image of Figma Saber VS Fraulent Rei. Looks like Rei is well on her way to losing.
After I had finished this image, I noticed that the hit counter was already at 20,900 hits. I guess I took longer than I had expected.
For reference, here’s the original image:
As you can tell, there are quite some differences.
In order to achieve the pixel look, I first shrunk this 10 mega pixel image down to 320×240, and from there, began pixel-pushing details back into the image.
In order to clean up the transparency properly, I couldn’t use my regular selection tools without ruining the edges. Turning off anti-alias just wasn’t cutting it. So instead, I used the eraser tool under the pencil setting and began hard-cleaning stuff I didn’t need. I then touched up the edges using the pencil tool to get the non-transparent anti-alias working smoothly.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t fix the lighting, so the characters still look too realistic from what I had wanted the end result to be.
From there, I began applying filter upon filter upon filter to make the image look even more pixelated. I could have gone in and literally pixel pushed everything to exactly what I want, which was 16-color sprites, but that would have taken more time than I wanted to invest.
Next, I grabbed a background image from Guilty Gear, and put in the Guilty Gear HUD (cuz it’s a cool looking HUD).
The FX, I won’t reveal how to do it. That’s my specialty. 😉
Hope you enjoyed the image!
Congratz dude! And awesome photoshop picture as usual ^^ keep the good work!
I was curious about the FX… but since its your secret skills… dammit hehehe ^^;
Ike Saber! Show those Fraulein that Figmas rock! ^^
congrats 🙂
great photoshop, it has the pixelish look 😀
Congrats on the 20k xD. Keep it up ^^. The “slice effect” looks awesome.
Congrats! hope the newsletter get you more and more people to read your blog.
Great work on this picture !
For me, the “too realistic look” is like Mortal Kombat or Clayfighter, an old SNES game, but yours figmas are closer to SNK sprites 😉
Congrats! 😀
And the image looks great!
Congrats on the new milestone~ It surely feels motivating when things are going on the right path. On the other hand mine went astray and I had to restart it orz…
Btw the ‘screenshot’ reminds me of a PS2 game in development called Fate/unlimited codes that will come with Figma Saby Lily in December (I think). What do you think of it? Danny Choo seems to be indulged by it.

Thanks everyone! I’m really glad you all like this work. I had a lot of fun making it!
@ JC : They started off looking incredibly “Mortal Kombat” and I was aiming for something more SNK. I do have some SNK references, and unfortunately, the end result was still far from SNK style. I decided to settle with a hybrid more closer to Guilty Gear (hence why I decided to use a GG background instead of an SNK one).
@ Q : Yeah, saw those a while back. It’s definitely impressive, though it’s a shame that I’ll probably never own one. 🙁
Grats on the 20,000. Putting your blog on other “places” increases your number of views, lately mine have been decreasing because of the lack of new posts
very nice work, it’s like real
grats on your 20k 😛 It’s exciting to see the counter go up sometimes haha.
But damn…I wanted to say that photoshop up there is freakin awesome! I had to double take for a second there trying to think of what fighting game had Saber in it! Her sword effects are truly awesome. I love it.
