Between the time after AFA and CGM, I had the opportunity to go out and about Singapore. From what I had been told, this time of year was a good time to be in Singapore, as it was nice and cool in December. I’ve been to Singapore in the summer, and honestly, it’s too much for me to handle. The December weather in Singapore felt very much like a warm summer in vancouver. To think, the majority of the time, Singapore is like this, or hotter. It seems kinda nice.
I wanted to see some monkeys but didn’t get the opportunity to. These are photos from my brother in law. I’m floored by the detail of these photos. I should ask him what lens he used for this.
Almost as if in defiance, this little baby monkey climbed up onto this sign.
One of the local supermarkets. They stock things that I’ve never ever seen up close before. North American supermarkets have mostly mainstream stuff, and squid would not be considered mainstream over here…
From what I heard, FairPrice is under NTUC, which is some sort of unionized supermarket. There’s some benefits to being “members” which I’m assuming is union members. I don’t quite know how it works, but if a union is big enough to own their own supermarket chain, that shows how powerful they are. I wonder how things work at the negotiation tables…
Simply not available in North America. By Knorr too!
Seeing this blew my mind, especially since North American Heinz just has ketchup, mustard, and other basic North American condiments really. It’s pretty cool though! It goes to show the market in Singapore is more interested in Chilli Sauce than ketchup.
Another bottle, this time by Del Monte. It’s really interesting to see usually North American brand labels selling asian sauces in a mainstream manner.
A cake shop called the Icing Room. Very unique cake designs. They have fully decorated cakes that are small enough to be consumed by 1 or 2 people (such as this one). The price however, is equivalent to an 8″ cake though!
Delicious! Vancouver has asian-style cakes too, but nowhere near as elaborate. These cakes seem more in line with Japan’s quality of aesthetics.
Even the sushi looks better quality than T&T!
I really do like their attention to aesthetics.
The cake we ended up buying. Sorry for the terrible lighting and exposure. No DSLR. Regardless, the cake was absolutely delicious!
Since my brother in law was getting married, there were a lot of traditional Chinese customary gifts going around. It’s a basket of mandarin oranges with “Happiness” labeled on them.
Other various gifts that also came in a basket. A very traditional-style basket too!
Sorry for the blurry photo, but whatever. If you looked at the previous Singapore post, you’ll notice a flower-looking christmas fixture. (actually, facebook friends will see it in the album). Well, to tell you the truth, those pictures from that post were ALL from last year. I never got around to posting Singapore 4/4, and posted it as if it was part of my recent trip. I did hint in there that something was amiss though. How many of you caught on to it?
I bring this up because this year, in the same spot of the flower-like fixture is this giant cathedral-like display. As Singaporeans know, the Christmas displays are different every year. So if you had seen or been aware of some of the decorations from last year, you’ll have caught on to it! 🙂
Time for dinner. You NEVER see any of these in food courts in Vancouver. I don’t think even the asian malls around here have these. It’s just such a cool idea to have food prepared in a clay pot at a food court. After ordering one of these though, I regretted it the next day. I was still coughing, and this clay pot was VERY heaty, causing me to cough A LOT the next day. 🙁
The full dinner. My clay pot of food on the bottom of the pic.
Just outside, you can see a very nice view of Marina Bay Sands and surrounding buildings. This is a panorama shot taken with my Sony TX-1. Click to see a larger size. Right click and view image to see an even larger size!
A close-up of Marina Bay Sands. When I was in Singapore last year, the top “cruise ship” section had not been built yet. I saw the three towers from a distance – at Marina Barrage at night. From the construction, and the lights and everything, it looked like something out of Ghost in the Shell. I had no idea they were going to put a ship on top of it like that!
The “durians”. I remember when these were first designed and built, how there was a lot of PR about it being an architectural and mathematical wonder, since it’s able to block out the sun’s rays all around. I wasn’t sure if it was designed so that the panels would shift in accordance to the sun, or if the panels were aligned in such a way that it would block the direct sunlight at all times.
A close up of the lotus. It’s still under construction. I’m tempted to turn this into a tilt shift photo. Maybe later.
If you were in and around the same places that I was, then you should know by now where I was from looking at the photos thus far. You might even have seen this bag in one of the shop windows.
I find it interesting how it’s referred to “hp” or hand phone. North Americans call it Cell Phone. Or the technical term “Mobile Phone”.
I don’t know if this is a wallet or a passport holder. But I liked it.
A boutique for eyebrows. Who’d have thought there would be a market big enough to start an entire retail store?
Christmas lights at night. They were still setting these up.
umisushi.
My wife getting her licks.
More awesome traditional wedding gifts. I really like the traditional basket. It’s so interesting!
Delicious fruit tarts and assorted desserts! They were all very delicious! omg.
I was still coughing at the time, so needless to say, these did not help my cold. But damn it was worth eating!
Can’t remember what kind of cake this was. But if I recall correctly, it was moist, and fairly delicious.
? What’s this? I can’t remember. O_o;
The McDonald’s in Singapore actually serves cakes too! In Vancouver, all we got are those damn muffins. I want me a Darn Good Brownie!! Or maybe some Diva Cake!
For obvious reasons, the Happy Meal boxes in Singapore are different from the ones in North America. It’s so interesting to see how different they are from North America. A live-action Ronald instead of an illustrated one, tips for kids, and not a single piece of capitalist promotional propaganda anywhere. Complete opposite of North America Happy Meal boxes. However, Vancouver’s Happy Meals have long since gone environmentally friendly, and use recycled paper bags instead. There have been some rare instances where they use the cardboard box, mostly for certain high-profile promotions.
There were several instances during my stay where the weather was like this. The clouds rolled so fast, it was like watching a storm. I suppose it is a storm, as the downpour and lightning was pretty severe.
Pics of the Icing Room. You’re allowed to design your own cakes too! They give you a pre-iced cake, and colored icing, creams, gels, etc. And away you go! That’s the way to do it! Get your customers to do the work, and then have them pay for it!
mmmm… do you want some? I know I do!
The cool thing is the staff are required to wear these costumes. You can’t see the lower half from here, but just look at Mikuru, and there you go.
We all know that Singapore has a lot of shopping malls. But what intrigues me are these sort of “low-budget” hole-in-the-wall shopping centers littered around Singapore. They’re mostly out of the way from the main streets like Orchard Road, and are sometimes hard to spot until you’re right up to it, or unless you already know it’s there.
These shops are multi-leveled just like the newer shopping centers, except there are lot of branches outwards that loop all around like some sort of crazy maze. And the ceilings are low too!
Not only is it claustrophobic, some of these branches are downright creepy too! There are stalls at each section where merchants set up their “boutiques” to sell their wares.
I have to say, Singapore’s got a lot of small business owners, and a lot of them must be crammed in these little shops. I wonder if these businesses make much money…
Just outside, off the main road. Do you know where this is? Some of the minor “landmarks” should be familiar to some of the local readers. 🙂
Guess where this photo was taken. But wtf, 2009?!
In the previous Singapore post, where I was eating tako balls, that was at Takeshimaya… last year. This year, I had tako balls too, but you might be able to tell that the lighting is different. Takeshimaya had renovated their food court, and I was amazed at how nice it looked. Singapore is always changing, so it’s kinda refreshing even to visit familiar places to see how much has changed.
My mean. It’s called a “Roti John”. You already know that I love Roti Prata, so I figured that this might be a good try too. I was horribly horribly mistaken. This thing tasted terrible. The hot sauce was too much, the egg and beef just weren’t tasty. It was mostly all bread. I can’t say that I’ll “never have a Roti John again” because I’ve seen other Roti Johns after and they looked pretty delicious. Just don’t have the Roti John at Takeshimaya, I guess.
More wood block toys. Japanese products are always so nice to look at. 🙂
LAST year, I got Royce chocolate covered potato chips. It was a little weird tasting, so this year, I just went with straight-up chocolate medallions. I sampled these at the store, and absolutely loved the taste. $15 a box! I’d say not bad considering how much chocolate you get from it, and how high quality these are. I prefer these over Purdy’s, but that’s just me.
A little brunch. Can you guess where this is? It’s a franchise. Unfortunately, they performed under my expectations. I’m assuming it’s because the staff are mostly new. Regardless, the ham and the cheese were delicious. Just looking at this right now is making my mouth water.
Wife decided to order a chicken salad one.
For Konata. :3
What’s this? A cream puff? Not just any cream puff. This is durian cream puff! Needless to say, I was not interested in eating this. Really, durian isn’t my thing. I really can’t stand the smell of it. But obviously, some people (my wife included) love durian.
Well, that’s it for now. I’ve still got more posts on Singapore, but those will come whenever I feel like it.
I hope you enjoyed these pics, and got a better feeling of what Singapore is like. And for those that have been to these places before (whether because you’ve toured there, or you’re local) I hope you enjoyed me sharing these experiences with you, and you enjoy these experiences as much as I have. 🙂
But before I go… say… who here likes JRPGs and owns a Nintendo DS? If you do, go to the associated facebook page and tell me what your favorite DS JRPG is.
Hmmm….I’m suspicious
Are you Singaporean or American actually???
Somehow, this post is kinda interesting for me, many at there are something new to me, although we are neighbor on the map ==
The ship on the Marina Bay, if I not mistaken, it is kinda like a leisure place which you can much fun at there.
Oh ya, about the food that you don’t know about it’s name, I think it is ??? or ???(very low possibility) from its look.
Well, you can go ask Ex14 if you want to, since she is the locals ^^
Let’s just say I’m neither here or there. lol!
Yes, it’s on Marina Bay. It’s called the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. It’s expensive, that’s for sure.
Hmmm…..I wonder….
does AFAX held annually at there every year???
AFA is held in Singapore annually, yes. btw, the X represents 10, as in 2010. 😛
Oic….
If can, I want go and take a look at there.
Hmmm…
AFA held at December right?? Can get the ticket now and how to get?? = =
p/s: sorry for being childish and independent for asking this question ><
I’m not sure if you can get tickets now. Google it, and you’ll probably find your answer.
I checked it. No. ==
And also, it held at middle of Nov, don’t know that time are the holidays or not…
Mid November? Dang… don’t know if I can go this year, then… we shall see…
Hmmm….??
Not every time is held in same day???
They haven’t post out the 2011, so I didn’t really know about what going on in this year…
Does Super Robot Taisen OG Saga count as a JRPG??
Yes.
Bad Radiant, you just made me incredibly hungry.
Those hot sauce pictures reminded me of the culture shock I had when I traveled up north. I was surprised at not being able to find condiments so common to me up and front and instead crammed in some aisle.
That building with the boat thing on top of it, I wonder why someone did it I can’t really think of any other reason than to look cool.
That last question about the DS made me go check which game I liked the most and came to an unfavorable realization, I haven’t finished most of my DS RPGs. I do wonder what favorite one is, Twewy? Izuna? Pokemon? Whatever, time to get cracking.
haha nom time?
How far North did you travel? Up to Canada? Did you see all the igloos, and the dog sleds? And yeah, we don’t need condiments because we just use maple syrup for everything. 😉
You’re right though, now that I pay attention to it, our condiments are usually in some corner aisle. I am quite shocked to hear from you that they’re up-front for your area!
I mainly asked about the DS RPG thing to confirm that the prize-winner does indeed have a DS, and does indeed like JRPGs. ^^
Good thing I read this post just before lunch time. I can really use some of those extremely nommy-looking cakes. *Tummy grumbles*
‘What the hell?’ was my reaction to that ship on top of those buildings. Is it accessible to people?
Haha, I should do a full explore of Singapore someday. I’ve only been there once for a short stay because of a flight transfer.
haha. I miss those cakes… 🙁
Yes, that “ship” definitely is accessible to people…
😉
Singapore is a great place to spend some holiday time. It’s right up there with Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea, I’d say.
Don’t know much about Singapore my self, but this post just solidified my thoughts on visiting for sure now.
Nice to see such nice photos of the delicious food and amazing scenery!
thanks! if you check out my travelog category, you’ll find more posts with Singapore photos!
I haven’t been to Singapore since I was a boy, so I don’t remember much except an Aquarium where lots of sharks where swimming, and those were over 14 years ago.
That said, I am absolutely stunned that Singapore uses Chinese, I thought they uses their own language or anything. It seems if I ever tour Singapore I would fit right in, considering I am fluent in Chinese and English.
wow! I didn’t know you went to Singapore! 14 years ago, eh? Nice… well, A LOT has changed since then. Heck, a lot has changed since a year ago! Check out my travelog category for more Singapore. 🙂
Not sure if you’d fit right in or not. Singaporean is different… they use a mix of English, Mandarin, Hokkien, and all sorts of stuff that make it a language all its own. And then there’s the Singlish accent too! They’ll be able to tell right away that you’re a foreigner.
well, I haven’t been home in 6 years. (Except one short trip to take care of password statuses.)
So I’m really excited, and i’m actually planning to stop by Japan for a few weeks just to check things out. Been wanting to go there too, haven’t been there since I was a boy as well. (well, Japan Narita airport I pass by really often, but that doesn’t count.)
I believe that cake should be a MArble cake? ._.?
And that ship is for 2012, where only an elite few who pay good money get to ride safely while watching us commoners drown in the great flood… I jest
It’s called a skypark and it’s basically an observation deck where people can check out the views of the CBD Area. It also boasts an Infinity Pooly and a supposedly Classy Restaurant helmed by a singaporean chef. For more adverts and promotional stuff info about the MBS SkyPark head on down to http://www.marinabaysands.com/SandsSkypark/Sands_Sky_Park.aspx
Gosh That was long =O i wonder if MBS would pay me for doing this hmmm…
Hmmm… Marble cake…? ._.? I think the inside was just egg… can’t remember. But what about the picture under that? That I really don’t know what it is, and you’d know! I know you know!
You should be a spokesperson. lol!
Its great to see pictures from singapore =)
but all this doesnt show the other side of singapore, everywhere is not that glamourous, so it cant really be a ”better feeling” of singapore, ^^
its just that i wanted to point this out because i get frustrated to hear when some people i know visit singapore and then give their thoughts on it when theyve only been in one or two places: orchard road and marina bay. (obviously since its the main tourist spot)and they havent really had the ”real” taste of singapore…blablah again sorry to go on ^^”
Im sure your wife made you visit around other than those main places or yourself? Btw she seems stunning! ^^” bring her along to GCM night nxt time lol XD
No need to talk about the food, it looks great as usual ^^
btw that dish
http://radiantdreamer.net/wp/singapore/singapore05/30.jpg
is called chwee kueh :9 nice to have it in the morning ^^
Anyway there isnt always positives about sg, but meh no need to talk about it! Im glad you enjoyed your stay and hopefully ill see you soon there. ^^
You make a good point. The plaza photos are only a glimpse… I did talk about “the other side” in some of my other Singapore posts (check out my travelog category), and it did spark a small discussion.
I usually try not to talk about the other side of Singapore, such as their society, government, and income class, because this blog isn’t about that, it’s about what I enjoy and want to share. But I can understand your frustration, especially considering that your origins too! 🙂
My wife actually WAS at CGM Night! *gasp* you may recall seeing her in my CGM post? I think you didn’t get to see her because she left before you came to talk to me. She did see you though! hahaha. Next time, for sure. 🙂
You’re right! That dish is called Chwee Kueh. My wife confirmed it. ^^ I should give you a prize. Email me your mailing address. ^^
Dont get me wrong radiant, im not saying anything ralated to your blog here, I was just stating my other views on singapore, plus its rather something me or you wont want to blog about (especially gov related!!)XD anyway i wasnt crtitising the way your blog ^^, its great the way it is.
and What D:
your wife was at the CGM night…
well its hard to remember after you smudged the face in the picture -.-
Next time we meet, well have chwee kueh together haha! *email sent*
^^ I totally understand. It’s hard to talk properly on the internet anyway.
I don’t think you got a chance to meet her, unfortunately. But I’m sure you will next time. Thanks for sending me the email! 😀
We’re going to singapore this summer
I think this is a nice info on where to go
(since my family always gets lost)
orchard road and marina bay,will be on our list 😀
the other side of the singapore…
we might check those out 😀
Sweet! You’re gonna experience one of the hottest times of the year in Singapore. It’s a good thing that so much of Singapore is air-conditioned now (at least the main areas that tourists visit)
The other side of Singapore is different from what you’d envision Singapore to be… nothing to be cautious about though. 🙂
Its been over 10 years since I’ve been to Singapore, I think a trip back is long overdue.
T&T is nice for getting things you normally can’t get, but I do wish that their food was as good as asia.
hmm. T&T is still a far cry from a real asian supermarket, but it’s doing its best, I suppose.
I have an aunt in Singapore and I’ve always wanted to go there D= hmmm… maybe in the summer but I bet it’s hot, and I can’t endure hot/warm climates very long.
Thanks for the pics though! It really opened up my eyes and views toward Singapore. I always thought Singapore is just the country with the cleanest streets, and that was basically all the knowledge I had about it.
If you can’t endure hot climates for long (like myself) then I recommend you go during the winter season. It will feel slightly too warm, but at night, it will feel “just right”.
I would hardly consider Singapore’s streets “the cleanest” but it most certainly isn’t bad. ^^
Glad that these posts on Singapore are giving you a better view of this country. 🙂
Very nice photos, thansk for sharing with us ^^
no problem. Be sure to check out the travelog for more photos!
I will ;D
Nnnnngh. Royce Chocolates. How dare you post images of them!
Such a pity they don’t ship to North America.
haha I agree. Royce chocolates are so good… I wonder why they don’t take on the North America market… probably because the local chocolatiers are also very good – like Godiva, Giradelli, etc.
Quite a nice post. Kind of shows an experience of everyday Singapore that I didn’t have since I went to all the tourist spots ^^
Food photos are making me hungry! I want to see the Icing Room, but I fear that the prices would make me cry T__T;
That’s true, now that I think about it – this post is mostly about the everyday aspects of Singapore as opposed to the tourist spots. I didn’t cover very much of those. ^^;
The prices are decent. A little bit on the pricey side for the smaller cakes…
I don’t think you really need to cover tourist spots since there’s probably tons of that everywhere else on the internet. I love how I get to know more about Singapore in a not so overly-tourist oriented way. =D
Thanks Ninjovee. Duly noted. 🙂
rofl xD
again on Singapore ayeee,, :DD
omg,, I’ll die to go back again, actually I would’t mind living there if they can speak English slightly better :LL
I remember back when I was 7 I use to go to Singapore and then when I was 13 I went back their again,, but after looking at the shopping malls and the buildings I’ll die to go back again, ><""
and it's only been 2 years since I've been there…
though the sweets were a slight turn off since I'm not really into sweet specially cream,, ughh =__="
but honestly Singapore has the best weather, compare to Australia now, it's boilings or maybe it's because I don't sweat ? :LL
What language do you speak, Yuuki?
There are a lot more shopping malls now than there were ever before! It’s pretty crazy! A lot has changed even since last year! O_o;
Singapore is hot… omg is it ever hot… it’s so hot and humid! ._.;;;
You were at Tampines Mall and Tampines 1! 😀
… right?
I really enjoy your blog posts *-*
You know Singapore pretty well! 😀
Thanks, Haruki. ^_^
Those cakes look beautiful!
I haven’t really explored Singapore, I’ve only been there twice. On those two occasions, I’ve felt that there’s a shopping mall almost everywhere. 😀
I actually like the sweet-salty flavor of the chocolate potato chips from Royce ^^ When I’m craving for some and it’s not readily available, I make do with some Lay’s dipped in Nutella. Lol.
Yeah, Singapore is pretty much one big shopping mall! 😀
I think Singapore has deliberately made certain zones to be hubs too – so not all the shopping needs to be done at Orchard anymore. Certain areas have exactly the same stores as everywhere else. This form of decentralization is good, so that it’s not always so crammed in one area. It’s still crazy though, how daily shopping at Orchard is like Boxing Day shopping in Vancouver. O_o;
I AM SO JEALOUS OF ALL THE DELICIOUS LOOKING CAKES! >.<
seriously this post makes me wanna live in Singapore, it seems like a really nice place!
Singapore definitely is nice! It’s like Japan in a way, but also a fusion of multi-cultural everything! There are not so nice things about Singapore too, which as a tourist, I can’t really talk about our judge other than from the surface. ^^;
O_O *drool* You really know the weak points of your audience, don’t you radiant? You must really love going to Singapore (Third trip to Singapore I’ve read about). Is there any specific reason (Beside the AFA) that attract you to that city? It must be quite a thrill to see how much it changes in a year or two. =)
hahaha it seems that my readers seem to like seeing food posts periodically. I try not to emphasize on it too much, since this isn’t a food blog. ^^
I think it’s more like I just ended up taking A LOT of pictures of Singapore. Check out the travelog category to see more posts about Singapore! 😀
I like Singapore for the variety of things, the friendly people, and how quickly it changes! Not sure if I’d love to live there long term though. Mostly because of the weather, and the long work hours culture there.
I’m sure there was something more specific I had thought to comment while reading this but by the end of it all I’m thinking is, “I’m hungry.” I’d love to go to Singapore sometime; it’s quite cheap to fly there from here. I think if you time it right it can even be cheaper to fly there than to other parts of Australia, since Perth is so far from the other major cities.
FOOOOD! hahaha
Have you met up with Fabrice yet?! He’s in Perth, you know!
the what is this I know it as Zhui kueh http://mykitch3n.blogspot.com/2007/12/zui-kueh.html
but I dunno how to spell it correctly so took a while to find it 😛 I love it and miss it like mad ^^;
haha when are you going back to Singapore to enjoy all the food you love, and to check out how things have changed?!
Huh? Go to the associated facebook page? I like both JRPGs and DS but I’m not sure how to get there.
I know of all the amazing things you posted this shouldn’t be what I’m most excited about but AHHHHHH! I love that chocolate pastry Konata always eats! It looks more delicious than I had imagined it would. And those Creme puffs remind me of Miyuki and her description on how she eats them.
My facebook page is http://facebook.com/radiantdreamer. The associated post would be the post that links back to this page. Oh well, the contest is over now anyway. ^^;
Cornets are awesome. ^^
I believe those aren’t creme puffs… but durian puffs. ^^;
