If you didn’t know this by now, today (August 31st) is Miku Hatsune’s 4th birthday.
I actually forgot about it until just yesterday, and incidentally didn’t know what to draw for my youtube video this week. Perfect subject, and perfect time too! 😀
One of the goals of this Miku Birthday illustration was speed. I wanted to get a full illustration done in the shortest amount of time possible. Sort of as an exercise. There are errors everywhere that I can see, mostly to do with anatomy and perspective, but the idea comes across fine, as well as the technique I finally chose to go with.

I had originally done a clean line art, as you can see through the youtube video, but ended up changing my mind after looking at the quite spontaneous sketching again.

As a reminder, today is the last day to enter the Collateral Damage Studios contest!
Nice quick sketch Radiant :). I really like the overall style you used on this one. I also dig the foreshortened effect that Miku’s right arm/hand has.
I like you notice some mistakes, but the character’s impression comes through. Plus since this was a speed drawing that would have to be expected, right :)? I also love the color scheme choice ;).
Take care buddy! I’ll keep in touch :).
PS. Just in case you haven’t noticed there’s now an avatar for my name. The reason? I decided to open a blog ;). You were one of the big influences in this decision. It’s still really early in its design though.
I’ve got some more drawings of a particular Taiga to work on now :). See ya!
Congrats on starting up a blog! 😀 I’ll keep watching it. 🙂
I think that I can definitely improve on my skills, even if it’s a speed drawing. I want to eventually get good enough that a speed drawing will still look right.
Even if you’re the only one who watches it in the end it was worth making. Thanks buddy :).
Also, frequent updates for the 3D version of Awesomesauce will be posted on there. That way I don’t spam your Facebook haha ;).
I think it’s great that you’ve started a blog. And it makes me happy that I’m part of the reason it exists. I’m always happy to hear when I’ve inspired someone to take action or take the next step! 😀
I almost forgot it was her birthday actually I’m not sure if I”m updated with vocaloid any more D: but i know they finally reveal the korean vocaloid yesterday.
I love the glow in the end of the image, I wanna try that asdfghjkl;
Korean vocaloid?! Nice! 😀 I gotta check that out! Any links?
I have a hard enough time remembering my friends’ birthdays let alone 2D characters. My favourite part of your illustration is the little Miku on the cake holding the candle, she’s so cute.
BTW, nice nekomimi 🙂
I was only informed of her birthday while reading/following my friends’ blogs and facebook posts. So in a way, this was quite a rush job! ^^
The nekomimi are actually from danbooru, which I’ve re-purposed with social media icons.
Whoa time sure flies. I remember Miku’s birthay is around now, but only just know that it’s on 31st August.
I haven’t checked your place or the arts for some time. The Miku picture is simple for eyes to look at, but effective. The warm light blue (with cooler blue shades on hair) has an interesting touch with the purple there, which feels a bit warm on some parts but cooler on elsewhere – as if it’s just in between. Proportions do look a bit odd, most notably with the fingers, but is this supposed to be some kind of a fisheye lens effect? At least it looks something like that in the progress video that you have done there (I must admit that I haven’t really watched your videos for a long time until today).
Btw is the picture saying Happy 3rd Birthday a mistake or something? But it’s great to see another lovely art out there. Keep it up!
Yeah, it’s supposed to be a fish-eye effect. I’ve never done a fish-eye effect before, so it was kind of experimental. I think that I’m missing something from it to make it look right.
The tinting is using a color balance similar to split tone shifting. It adds an interesting feel to the piece, I think.
Yeah, apparently, it’s her 4th birthday, not her 3rd. O_o;
Thanks for still dropping by. I still read your blog from time to time through the RSS reader, I just rarely comment nowadays. ^^
I can’t believe Miku is so young, I remember having the same reaction back during her first birthday. It feels like she just has been around forever.
I like the nendo Miku candle, wouldn’t mind that on my birthday cake.
Well, in a way, she’s been around for 4 years now. That’s a significant amount of time for a licensed character on average. But yeah, it does feel like she’s been around for much longer than that.
Actually now that I think about it – if you have the Miku winter playtime set, you could probably make a candle out of the molding!
Too cute! I love how you colored her hair. ^^
Happy birthday Miku!
Thanks! 😀 😀 Despite the somewhat strange proportions, I’m pretty happy how it turned out considering how I rushed it lol!
Sketchy look really suits the picture in my opinion and the perspective on the hand is very nice too!
Had no idea Miku even had a birthday haha that cake is epic though! c:
lol thanks I’m glad you like it. Yeah, I didn’t know until some of the blogs I read started mentioning it. 😛
you are awesome! haha your video helps me a lot about photoshop but hey.. hoe did you do the lineart so beautiful? my bamboo pen just make crappy line TAT…
Hi Nas!
A lot of it has to do with just simply practicing. Bamboos are actually pretty good. Just keep trying!
Cute sketch!
Happy brithday Miku 😀
