This week, I got two figures within 24hrs of each other. First was Supercell Miku Hatsune (The World Is Mine), and the next day, Black Rock Shooter. I took some pictures, but for some reason, didn’t feel like doing a photoshop of either of them this week. Not sure why. Oh well. My blog isn’t about catching the latest greatest trends anyway! It’s about sharing what I love. ^_^
So instead, I drew a fan art. Last night, I was up from 10pm until 2pm, reading Death Note. I’d already finished reading it before, but something about it is just gripping. I really enjoyed it. I was looking for a picture of L facing forward to use as reference. Interestingly, I only found 2 (and they’re not good shots). Every other shot of L shows him either 3/4 view, profile, or just slightly between front and 3/4 view. It was a little frustrating, but an interesting find.
So today, I decided to paint up L from Death Note. He’s my favorite. I like how goofy he is, yet so lethally smart. He’s Light Yagami’s complete mirror. As such, I couldn’t help but imagine that L has a dark side to him that he hides well. Watching his actions and his emotionless reactions seem to hint at it.

The dark atmosphere of your drawing suit L very well. A Death Note character i also like. He got uncommon intellectual and deductive capacities that combine perfectly with his strange side.
You’re right, it’s more important to share what we like instead of forcefully doing a review just for making one.

Thanks for the encouragement and support, Lylibellule. I think it was the right choice to sit Miku and BRS aside for now. Even though I took some pix of them already, I’m not all that impressed with the result, and I can’t think of anything to photoshop them with right now anyway. Better not to rush things.
I am quite happy with the result of L. I didn’t think the darkness thing would work until I started painting it further. It started looking more and more convincing as I painted. 🙂

it’s amazing how you finished it within 2 hours. the hands must have been tricky to draw (or maybe not for you) – i think if i were to draw the hands themselves would have taken me a few hours hah.

Hands are usually the hardest to draw, yes. It still is the hardest to draw! But once you get a good grasp on it (no pun intended), and figure out a technique that works for you, then it becomes easier.

I love the L art! He’s my favourite character from the series as well. This fanart has a very dark feel to it, even as L seems to be stacking sugar cubes 😀 I love the details put in the hair and the shadows and everything else are all so gorgeous!! I would love to see you try a Ryuk drawing next x)
Yes! Black Rock Shooter! It’s weird though, BRS is so awesome, yet at the same time, so underwhelming. I guess you’ll have to wait for a review to see what I mean. ^^

I hope that’s a typo, 10pm to 2pm!? That’s like 16 hours of reading Death Note! I’ve only watched about half the Death Note anime, but then for some reason lost interest. Even though I didn’t finish Death Note, I am a big fan of Takeshi Obata’s artwork! I also really enjoyed Hikaru no Go.
Art wise, it’s a great portrait of L, the mood fits perfectly. My favorite part of the image has to be the contorted hand. The shape of it makes the whole image very interesting. The rim light adds so much to the image and makes things pop.
I thought of trying out Camstudio myself, but because of the resolution I’m running my computer at (1920×1200), recording video at that resolution is really taxing on my system.

I watched the first episode of Death Note, and so far, it doesn’t ring as close to me as the manga does. Maybe you should give the manga a try. It’s a real page-turner! Especially when you consider that it’s got that whole competitive “chess-game” feel to it, just like Hikaru no Go, but on a different arena!

Camstudio is alright. It’s a little bit basic, but does the job. The unfortunate thing was (for me at least) it would sometimes encode it wrong, resulting in some serious problems if you try to open it in virtual dub. (opened fine in Premiere and After Effects though). I needed the peace of mind that I wouldn’t get a bad encode, so had to switch to Hypercam.
To keep it from taxing your system, you can record a specific size (for me, I’ve now gone to 1280×720) and crop your working space. That way you can also upload an HD version to Youtube! 😀

I used a Wacom tablet. Pretty much necessary for this sort of work.
How much is that? i’m thinking of drawing something as well in the near future.

They’re definitely sugar cubes. He has a sort of sweet tooth, and is always drinking coffee, or eating sweets or cake. ^^

Reminds me of a chalk artwork, the black and white suits L really well. His eyes are pretty terrifying, I wonder what he is staring at. I haven’t seen the entire anime series of Death Note but I’ve seen one of the Live action movies and found L’s actions of picking up things weirdly to be very strange, and your creation depicted his weirdness brilliantly.

According to the interview with the artist of Death Note, he decided to give L that kind of strange OCD quirk, and have him hold things as if they were dirty. His obsession with sugary sweets became more apparent after. You’ll notice the same sort of “character progression” with Near and his toys too.
