If that’s not enough, then maybe you’d like to look at 37 Facts That Make You Feel Like an Old Otaku.
Click the share button!
The only one that remotely makes me feel slightly old is the Pokemon one. Even then because I been playing it for half life.
Oh goodness, that makes me feel old too!
I’ve been playing that since blue! D:
I think that I have a more personal attachment to these facts because I’ve experienced these all with high intensity. Pokemon however, I didn’t play.
It’s strange how some of these which are probably older than Pokemon, didn’t shock you as much.
I agree about Pokemon making me feel old, I remember playing that when I was eight… that’s nearly 12 years ago now….
I started playing Pokemon Blue when I was 9 or 10 years old! It’s insane just how much time has passed!
You’re probably around the same age as Frostbite then.
Yeah, time passes quickly. Cherish every moment of it!
Wow… now I feel oldER. Thanks, Frostbite. π
Think about this way: You’re not a baby boomer
Ah Sega Dreamcast. I miss you~
Phantasy Star was released stateside on the Master System when I was born 23 years ago! That’s pretty old :O
… what’s a Dreamcast?
I am so glad you didn’t talk about playing the original series or warcraft, else I would REALLY feel old.
Thanks for mentioning that! Warcraft was originally released in 1994!! That’s SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO!!
Pion: wat is it? okai.. righto~ stop touchin’ me!
i just realized u wrote that other long article i just spent 20 minutes reading. how many sites do you have radiant?
Three. :3c
And look at the year that I wrote the article! π
Oh ya? PS1 came out in 1994? I didn’t get it til 1998. And I didn’t get the NES until early 90’s. We were late bloomers back then. Now I get almost all the systems I want on launch day, if not, within months.
AND WHAT IS UP WITH THAT SEGA AD?? 0.o Where was that printed at???
Yeah, I didn’t get a PS1 until a year or two later. I’m Day1 on buying systems now too, probably because we can afford it with our own money now, rather than begging parents.
Isn’t that ad great?! I have no idea where it was printed, but rumors say UK.
i’m also proud to say that my nephews, who are 4 and 5, have both had their hands on an N64 controller many times, i’m making sure they appreciate the greats from that era (though I think i’ll wait a bit for some, so they can enjoy them more).
Mmm… nicely done. I have to say that I am proud of you. You have done the right thing. π
Hopefully, in future, they won’t react like the way those other kids did in the bonus link. XD
Haha, I guess I am old if I actually have played Super Mario on an actual NES :). In fact, I still have that same NES.
The first games I ever played on NES were Super Mario, Ghosts n’ goblins, and Castlevania II. Geez, why can’t games these days contain the same amount of fun these old titles had… Maybe because in the mainstream market retro-ish games don’t sell? Pfft, I doubt that’s the case :).
Who here’s ever played on an Atari or a Coleco vision before? Those were actually the first consoles I’ve ever played :).
I’m also surprised you mentioned Duke Nukem but not Shadow Warrior ;). I guess that game didn’t quite hit the markets as good.
Also, was I the only one that kind laughed at that Sega ad?… I can’t stop laughing LOL. *Ahem*
Oh man, I could go on for hours about this type of topic >,<… I love it though how indie developers are now making more retro-styled games :D. Bring back the classics I tell you! Bring them back! *gets off soap box*
Take care buddy, I definitely feel old now since I can remember seeing and playing many of these old but great titles :).
Oh man those were the days dude! I remember how ‘special’ the SNES felt compared to the 8-bit era. The sounds were absolutely amazing, and so were the graphics! That sort of magic hasn’t happened in a long time, even with these new generation systems. It just doesn’t feel as revolutionary for some reason.
I’ve played Atari. Even ET. >_< And yes, I've played Colecovision and Intellivision. I wonder how many kids of that era understood the Sega ad... Oh that reminds me, I just finished a project with a client that has to do with a retro game. Stay tuned for it! π
Haha! If I ever make a game I’ll definitely include the retro-styled gameplay :). Maybe a bit on updated graphics if only to appeal to the younger generation, but definitely the old-style gameplay that us ‘Old folk’ miss.
Did you know that the SNES actually used sampled sound effects for both music and sounds? They just have it extremely down-sampled to decrease size for the rom which created a ‘dirtified’ lo-fi sound of its own :). Probably the most treasured and sought after effect since then for retro or classic-like games. There’s a small section on it on the wiki of pedia ;).
I too have sought after this sound, but have been unable to replicate it. And haven’t, as of yet, found a recipe that makes a similar one :\.
I never actually saw that Sega ad (I was a pretty straight Nintendo gamer in my youth.). But seriously, how did they even get THAT published. I mean, who didn’t get the hidden dark joke in there haha. Not to mention the picture says it all *Cough, Cough* *Ahem!*.
Dun’ worry, I’ll stay tuned for sure :). You sir, are a model artist in more than one regard. I’ll see you later dude! Take care π
Oh yeah I knew about the sound sampling thing a long time ago. Though they used it more prominently in GBA games (higher-def). They essentially turn them into midi-type samples, so you could play them with various tones, just like midi. It was pretty cool back then!
Are you talking about a very specific sample?
Thanks for the flattery! π
Yeah, they make I think what’s called a Soundfont if I remember right–basically a library of sound samples. Then you can use a tracker type of program to establish which sound is triggered using an MIDI controller as you mentioned (A keyboard for those who didn’t know :)) as well as its pitch.
I’m guessing to achieve a similar SNES sound would involve the use of down sampling as well as hipass and lopass filters to make it sound more lo-fi. I’ve clearly not played with it enough though :).
From what I understand the GBA/DS use much higher sampling due to the increased size a memory card can hold. But I’ve yet to find out how they still achieve that iconic sound :). Maybe some day there’ll be a VST someday that can do it (Basically a virtual effect that you apply to a sound).
As to a specific example, I’m just referring to many SNES games I’ve played and still treasure from my past :). I’ve played a whole heap load of Square RPG games which had soundtracks and effects that were most impressive despite the memory size. Notable ones would definitely be Final Fantasy titles, Chrono trigger, Secret of mana and such :).
Damn, this whole thing has made me want to try to figure it out again haha! π
If you’re interested in feeling the nostalgia, there’s a plugin for winamp called Highly Experimental. It’s a soundchip emulator that lets you play SNES, NES, and PSX sound files that use the methods you speak of, so it’s true authentic sounds, and not pre-recorded soundtracks.
http://www.neillcorlett.com/he/
Looks like he’s broken that off to be PSX-only now though. There’s another one called SNESAmp that does the same thing though.
What! starcraft is that old! and it took them ages then to make the recent new starcraft =/ but still its an awesome game!
lol pokemon i cant believe how big the pokedex has become, but one thing for sure Im only a fan of the old generation ones until the Joho one with Lugia and Hoho, the rest after that yuck :/
luckily im still young.. oopps.. didnt mean it that way XD
its not that your old like grandpa okay! still young ^^
Yeah, SC is THAT old! lol!
All I remember about Pokemon is Pikachu. I had little interest in any of the other pokemon, and sort of didn’t play Pokemon because of it.
… GET OFF MY LAWN! XD
Now this reminds me I had PSX and PS2. While my cousin have Sega that need to insert tape on top of it, we used to play FIFA football if I’m not mistaken. Until now I still love playing Tekken, DOA was okay since their moves are not as awesome as Tekken, that’s just my opinion. Haha old days was great.
lol the way you say you had a PSX and PS2 makes me feel old, because you’re talking about it like how I talk about my NES. O_o;
I still prefer Soul Calibur. hahaha!
Haiz…..I more feel like i am an infant right now. π
From all the games u have wrote, I only have play 1 from all of them = = The pokemon.
But only start from Fire Red, Leaf Green, Sapphire, and Emerald. That’s all.
Any gaming gadgets like PS2, PS3, N64, SEGA, NDS, PSP and the others. I don’t have a single one. Until now, what I only have is a pc suffered with more than 50% damages…HAIZ…….
lol! you make me feel old! XD
This didn’t make me feel as old as the otaku article did, probably because I was never as into games as I was into anime. I don’t remember the release of Street Fighter 2, but I do remember Super Street Fighter 2, which was the first console game I got addicted to.
Yeah could be… this article actually made me feel older because I was so into video games more than anime back then…
pokemon … final fantasy.. sonic… damn, i really feel old now T_T that picture of tomb raider scared me XDD
haha I know right?! I should update the post with how the remake looks in comparison lol.
Pokemon is one of the things that made me feel really old. I got to play Blue, Red and Yellow (Yellow is still my fave). I wonder who around here knows of the Missing no. glitch XD
I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned the Famicom here. That would have made me feel REALLY old.
and a side note. I actually got that Dead or Alive joke. *hides*
I never played Pokemon, so I wouldn’t know what the Missing no. glitch would be. π
The Famicom is darn old! I figure very few of my audience would be old enough to remember that…
You’re 99 years old too?! hahaha
Well, it’s a nifty glitch that I’m not sure if it was intentional or not. You can clone an item in your inventory (it will become 99 units and that’s the max) if you encounter Missing no. that’s a very good workaround for getting money/levelling up Pokemon (there’s an item that can make them level up if you use it on them)… so yeah XD it’s kind of a pain in the ass to do, but sooooo worth it. *rolls*
Famicom: UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT A B A B SELECT START!!! if it doesn’t happen, restart and repeat! XD
and yes, I was 99 years old… around 6 years ago. LOL
I remember the item cloning trick! XD
And the Konami Code! I will never forget! and it’s UUDDLRLRBA.
I was 99 years old over a decade ago. lol!
Another awesome post! Had no idea Super Mario 64 and the first Halo were that old already
Haha this was really fun to read, and bearded Link is looking rather epic as well!
The Halo and Mario 64 facts really got me, especially Halo since it’s still around!
Yeah I did a google search for “Old Mario” and “Old Link” to see what would turn up.
You know what’s sad? I still haven’t finished Shadow of the Colossus, but in my defense I popped it in for the first time only a couple years ago. I was debating getting the ICO/Shadow of the Collossus PS3 bundle but I have faith I’ll return to my PS2 game and start back up again. The longest period of time I’ve had between putting down a game and picking it back up to finish it is 6-7 years with Final Fantasy V
I’m definitely going to get the remakes. I can’t wait to re-experience the epicness of these games in HD! They were beautiful games then. They look a little dated now though, but probably still just as fun to play.
Yush! Starcraft π
By the way, who is that girl on #24?
I’m not really sure who she is. I’m sure googling will turn something up.
A bit of a late comment here, but looking back some of the pictures it’s surprising how fast time flies by all of a sudden. I still hum the BGMs for it now and then, and even my sister recognises them lol.
I’ve also headed into the Ace Combat series and finished Ace Combat 04 not too long ago. Listening to BGMs on YouTube and reading the comments have I found out the game is now 10 years old. It’s a strange feeling, and I’ve just played it as if it’s new or something. Maybe I still play random retro games now and then (I’m going back to old Final Fantasy games recently too), so the feeling that the games are now that old already kinda hits me funny.
I know what you mean! I sometimes wake up in the morning with some old SNES tunes in my head hahaha.
Playing retro games will bring back some good memories, for sure. π
I caught myself saying “Damn! That was X years ago!?” through out the entire article. Once I saw that portable SEGA system I really did feel old lol I played on that thing as a kid and thought it was the greatest thing ever.
Number 20…….. I played it on ORIGINAL NES….. Then again I am born 1978 and still proud to be an Otaku that can NOT live without anime EVERY DAY!!!!! and I never hide it either, my workmates are still thinking I’m weird that train every day karate and yet I watch anime and cry out loud when sad things happen π I sooo love my life π
Nice! I know very few people outside of my circle who’ve played the originals on the NES. π
If you really want to make me feel old you should mention the first atari system. Thats where I started with gaming when I was 10 years old and haven`t turned back since. I had maybe 10 games on it including pac-man, donkey kong, pitfall and ET!!
The are probably people in thier 40`s and 50`s who could probably claim the spot of being the actual gaming pioneers moreso then me. I`m not really honestly sure when the first video game was made although it was probably a text game. The first graphics games.. who knows.
Other old games I remember there where awsome: Wishbringer, Battle Chess
hahaha I know the feeling. π I had ET as well. What a shitty game.
I think the first electronic game was PONG wasn’t it?
